So, the actual story of this book I really enjoyed. I thought it was chilling and some parts really stood out. However, the little racist remarks that added no story value REALLY pulled me out when they happened and made it harder to root for any of these people. I wouldn't have minded them if it actually added anything to the story or plot but they're two quick lines just thrown in for no understandable reason.
Like I can understand the need to have Abby not believed when talking about the rape of her friend and the heavy blame placed on women for these assualts because that later plays into the story of why no one believes, why getting help is near impossible, and why Gretchen relies so much on Abby.
I'd be interested to see Hendrix's other works to see if this is a theme, but sadly this 4 star book fell to 2 for me. Plus the dog died really horribly and I really didnt enjoy that, so that certainly didnt help. Will definitely do a Google for animal death/torture in the future :(
