10 Reasons You Should Read Dash & Lily's Book of Dares

1. Any story that begins with a notebook with clues tucked away in the shelves of The Strand is a book you need to read.

2. In a classic opposites attract romance, Dash and Lily are two teens who really could've only fallen in love first inside a notebook. Of course, that doesn't mean they're not suited for each other. Lily's optimism and Dash's cynicism have a nice way of balancing each other out.

3. This book is laugh out loud funny. Between Lily and Dash and their friends/family, I was laughing so hard I think I scared my cat!

4. I'm not usually one for quirky YA girls, but Lily sort of captured my heart. I really enjoyed her energy, and I didn't think she was optimistic as to be insufferable.

5. Praise be to David Levithan for writing teen boys I actually like as people. Even when they're making mistakes, his protagonists are never ***holes. Dash, while admittedly snarly and sullen, is also a stand up guy, one who helps girls get home and actually discovers he likes his ex-girlfriend much more after their breakup.

6. In all versions of this story, Boomer is an absolute delight. He's just a giant puppy of a best friend, and I adore him.

7. An ex-girlfriend character actually gets to be an nuanced person with valuable insight who is cordial friends with their ex? This never happens, but it does in this book! I really liked this characterization of Sofia and her scenes with Dash. This is the kind of dynamics between exes I want to see.

8. So much of this book is set in The Strand! And it makes you feel like you're in New York City during Christmas! And isn't that we all want and need in these times when none of us can actually go to NYC during Christmas and browse The Strand?

9. “I was attempting to write the story of my life. It wasn't so much about plot. It was much more about character.”

10. You know you want to read the book before you watch the show on Netflix. (Which is also intensely charming!)
