Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo

5.0

We are always a little hesitant to pick up something new and when we do, it's a slow and steady climb up. This is how I felt when I started this stunning book and wouldn't lie when the writing style didn't work for me initially. I almost shut it off and wondered what the hype was. But, gave it some time and I do not regret doing that. One bit.

The verse like writing almost poetic at times moves back and forth between Yahiara and Camino, girls connected by the same father and not knowing each other until their father's death unites them. (Not a spoiler and is on the blurb).

With the sombre and moody tone onset but with the hope of a better tomorrow, I was absolutely hooked and wanted to finish it ASAP. They say tragedies unite some people in the weirdest but humane way possible. This rings true with the story of these sisters who lived apart and now are fighting to unite and live together. The hurt, pain, regret, anger and shame of betrayal is raw in all the lines and you do not know who you should feel for more. We love and root for them equally and for them to be together.

All my thumbs-up for this YA read!
