So I think part of my problem is this was done on audio. And it's just impossible to follow. I get that China Mieville is smarter than I am, and I'm okay with him rubbing that in my face. But if I can't actually keep track of the story on audio, I usually find it's something in the writing, not my ineptitude.
That being said...I might one day re-try this in print. I find the concept intriguing, and really do wish I could follow the characters and concepts more closely. But even at half way through, I was trying to read a synopsis online to help myself sort it out...and that's when I realized this is more effort than an audiobook should be, and it's time to put it down and move on.
