I adored this so much. The only thing I knew about the story before starting it was that the main characters were a prison guard and prisoner, so I was expecting something quite dark but this was so funny and the characters had amazing chemistry.
It's a pretty short novel and I finished it in a couple days but I thought the pacing of the story was perfect and I really liked how the relationship between Jiang Chijing (MC) and Zheng Mingyi (ML) developed. Both characters were very interesting with their own quirks, and even though JCJ was working at the prison, he was technically a civilian officer and not a prison guard, so there were fewer restrictions on his relationship with ZMY, allowing them both to spend more time with each other one-on-one. Due to several factors such as JCJ's hobby of voyeurism, ZMY's high IQ, and the fact that they were neighbours, their conversations and interactions were so much fun to read. I really enjoyed their banter and the way they kept each other on their toes, especially with how JCJ's was constantly trying to keep ZMY from finding out that he had been spying on him before ZMY was imprisoned. It was hilarious how he would plan out what to say to ZMY and still fall into a pit that ZMY dug for him, and coupled with his sheer sexual attraction towards ZMY, JCJ was truly Suffering (AKA bro was horny gripping every moment he spent with ZMY).
There was no power imbalance despite their roles and I appreciated how open-minded and fair JCJ was as a character, not only to ZMY but also to the other prisoners, because it was pivotal to the development in their relationship and the plot as he began to trust ZMY. ZMY was the most intelligent character and I appreciated how he explained things in layman terms and his thought process to JCJ because I would've been lost otherwise. In terms of aura, ZMY had Big Dick Energy and the big dick to complement it. He was so damn smooth when putting on the moves with JCJ and I was not surprised whenJCJ folded like a house of cards and initiated their first kiss while at the prison. The forbidden aspect of their relationship was so thrilling honestly, and it's even better because they're both equally horny for each other and they share similar kinks. I LOVE it when the MC and ML are absolutely crazy for each other and they match each other's freak (yes, ZMY spied on JCJ too) - JCJ and ZMY are literally the perfect match.
I really liked the supporting characters too because they were distinct and weren't just tools to push the narrative. I appreciated how the author developed their relationship with JCJ and ZMY, and I found myself growing fond of them, Xu Sheng in particular because he was a good example of what it means to be a person caught by the burdens he had to carry. The author giving the supporting characters a happy ending as well was the icing on the cake - Xu Sheng with Li Xi (Princess), and Luo Hai with Yu Guang. They were different from the main couple but the overall effect was still very harmonious.
To be honest, my only complaint is that the smut between JCJ and ZMY was basically fade to black which was such a shame because they couldn't get enough of each other outside of the bedroom.
