Abhorsen by Garth Nix

4.0

Abhorsen wasn't nearly as good as Lirael. It was more intense and exciting, but also more dark and serious. It was just action scenes followed by boring traveling scenes, followed by more action. I liked the last book because of all of the characters and fun moments, but there wasn't any time for that here.

I still love Dog. She's the best! And we got to learn a bit more about Mogget, which was cool. I enjoyed the mythology that was added about the nine great free magic beings and how seven made the Charter.

I still don't like Sam as much as Lirael but he's better than he was. (Now that he has less responsibility.) I didn't like Nick's parts. I don't know how I feel about him as a character, since he spent the whole book bespelled and sick.

Hedge was a good bad guy, though his motives were a bit simplistic and the Destroyer was just your typical malevolent evil because he's evil.

The last battle was really good and had a couple of really great parts but the ending was bittersweet and I wanted more of an epilogue.

Huge spoilers!

I hated
Spoilerhow Lirael lost her hand and her Dog! I don't know if the Dog is dead or not. She's a creature of free magic after all, right? But I'm sad for Lirael.

Will I read any of the later books? Probably not. They don't get good reviews and I don't like that Lirael's storyline becomes dominated by a stupid romance.
