I wanted to enjoy this volume much more than I actually did. I have watched the anime and really enjoyed it. I have also previously read the regular volume 1, rather than this deluxe version, so I knew what to expect from the beginning.
I don't really like this art style. It does somehow work for the style of story that is being told though; feeling gritty and raw. But it meant that I read through this volume much faster than I expected because I wasn't stopping to admire the artwork.
Lots of the characters annoyed me, particularly Seras, which also decreased my engagement with the story. I do like Integra though and most of my favourite scenes involved her.
My husband really likes this series and I remember the anime getting better as it went on, so I am likely to read the next two deluxe volumes at some point as we already own them.
