No Promises in the Wind by Irene Hunt

One of the reviews I read here on goodreads stated that the characters weren't "three dimensional" and that Josh's love interests were ridiculous. I say to her, well, duh. The boy is 15. The MC's are 10 and 15, they aren't fully fleshed characters because they aren't fully fleshed humans. Josh's love interests are a tribute to his age, as is his struggle to both be his own man and his parents' son.

This is a wonderful story that allows today's teenagers to connect with a time they are likely 3 generations removed from. I can see why my niece is reading it in school. She can relate to these boys, their will to be on their own, their need to follow their own passions and interests at any cost, being misunderstood and feeling under valued with parents.
