Dream Boy
by Madelyn Rosenberg, Mary Crockett
The concept of this book sounded really cool. After all, what's more surreal and weird than having dreams come to life? Except what this turned into was a lot more boring than I expected. Maybe I just had high expectations, but the "dreams" seemed so straightforward. And weird how many of the townspeople dreamed of other people who then came to life and started living in town. If these beings really were dreams manifested in reality, I feel like they should've been a lot more surreal or out of place. Most of them acted very normal.
Admittedly, it was also very disappointing that the book boiled itself down to the "special snowflake" plot where the main character had some power that some antagonist wanted, thus putting said main character in danger. And unsurprisingly, she had two different guys after her with one of them as her best friend. I would be irritated by the use of this tired cliche if I had been invested at all, but I honestly wasn't. I was bored by the book very early on and I only kept going because it was such a quick read. The really sad thing was I sped-read through most of the book and I didn't feel like I was missing out on anything. I could actually follow what was going on.
I feel like something really incredible could be done with this idea. Hopefully there's a book out there that really takes advantage of the scenario. Unfortunately, I don't feel like this one did at all.
