King Dork Approximately
by Frank Portman
King Dork Approximately is Frank Portman's follow up to King Dork (2006). I first read King Dork as a newbie high school librarian, and I thoroughly enjoyed the antics of Tom Henderson and Sam Hellerman as they worked to form their rock band and impress girls. I was excited to see what they were up to now! Unfortunately, too much time has passed, and I have read too many books to recall specifics of King Dork. And Tom, who narrates his own story, expects me to recall too many of those details. I would have loved for him to give me more reminders. But, students who pick up King Dork Approximately will probably have just read King Dork and not have that issue. I like Tom's honest, sarcastic narration. (Although he even questions his own reliability as a narrator.) Tom is trying to figure out the "rules" for school, life, and love. Where to I fit in? This universal question that we don't quit asking after high school. Tom is smart, funny, and dorky, and reminds me of characters in novels by John Green and Andrew Smith. So, I am trying to "sell" King Dork comparing the novel to authors the kids know. King Dork is currently checked out, so we shall see if I can get it some momentum as King Dork Approximately is released.
