An accessible place to start for anyone wanting to get into classics. This feels so modern in writing style, and gorgeously done, too. Much of this prose feels like experiencing a still life painting, enlarging the tiny details, the minute brush strokes. The way the light falls, the way the flowers are arranged - there is no detail that doesn’t feel important and lush. Not to mention a plot that dangles you over the edge of mystery, finally pushing you over the climactic end. I also found the protagonist to be fleshy and real, with wants and desires and actions I could see her making. Sprinkled with humour, this has to be one of my favourite classics.
