Skinwalker by Faith Hunter

1.0

DNF at 20 percent.

This did not age well. From the internalized misogyny of the protagonist (ugh girls wearing heels and eating salads I'm not like those girls I'm so tough) to the author misappropriating the Navajo concept of Skinwalkers to the Cherokee Nation. They are not the same thing. Also the Navajo nation historically dislikes the use of Skinwalkers in media. As Native American writer and historian Adrienne Keene explains:

“What happens when an author pulls this in, is we as Native people are now opened up to a barrage of questions about these beliefs and traditions,” said Keene, “but these are not things that need or should be discussed by outsiders.”

I'm not someone to immediately cry foul when an author about a culture/identity that is not theirs however this seems like quite a bit of negligence on the authors part.

Also the book's writing style was jarring and the main character was a tired version of previous well liked urban fantasy heroines.
