The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon
4.5
4.5 stars…check your trigger warnings! The plot centers around solving the murder of a man who was killed after raping a woman. What was really fascinating for me is that the FMC, Martha Ballard, is based on a real woman’s story. She is a fascinating and inspirational historical figure. This story takes place when she’s in her 50s so we get to hear her experience as a woman, mother, and professional. I enjoyed the mature perspective she brought to her story and the events that happened to the younger women in the novel. I should note that this is not a biography. Ariel Lawhon expertly weaves fiction into historical events. For this novel she took Martha’s diary and filled in gaps with what she thinks could have happened. The end is a really intriguing story that had me hooked from start to finish. This was a top tier mystery that also had Little House on The Prairie vibes.
