Humankind: A Hopeful History
by Rutger Bregman
hopeful
informative
inspiring
slow-paced
A generous 4 star because I ultimately agree with the author and think it's an important argument to make. However, I do not like the narrative structure he utilizes over and over, where he presents something as rational or factual and then proceeds to show how it is actually problematic or fundamentally inaccurate. It's a technique that's OK once or twice, but the reader knows the title of the book, we know the author's thesis going in, so it ends up coming off as manipulative, or like there's a lack of trust in the reader. At best it just makes the book longer than it needs to be.
Also, this book was written for a wide audience so some of the arguments aren't exactly ironclad or thoroughly researched. I get the sense he was doing his research to fit with his thesis in the sense that not all possible outcomes are given equal light in terms of how studies and records are presented.
