Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo

5.0

**SPOILERS** OH MY GOD. WOW. This book broke me and put me back together several times. I thought the first book was brilliant and clever and this book was exponentially better. The plots, the character development, the SCHEMING. WOW. I love each characters equally, but I have a special place in my heart for traumatized characters (*cough* Kaz). This book kept me guessing the whole time and I found myself continually baffled by Kaz and his schemes. The relationships are what kept me going. Kaz and Inej with their stolen glances, Jesper and Wylan with their flirtations, Nina and Matthias with their burning passion. UGH.

Unpopular opinion: Kaz does not deserve Inej. Like everyone else, I let out a little squeal during the bandage scene, but he will never deserve her. I assume that the final chapter is leading us to believe that they continue to heal, but it's not enough. It's probably unfair, but I really thought that he could change for her. She spent two years at the Menagerie going through unspeakable horrors, and she was willing to try for him, and yet he couldn't bear to touch her.

2nd Unpopular opinion: I didn't like Wylan. I felt like he was whiny, and uppity and had an attitude that was "Oh holier than thou." His relationship with Jesper was redeemable but ultimately his character fell flat for me. His backstory was obviously very sad but he was my least favorite.

I will need to reread this book eventually, but for now I need to heal.
