The Lost Girls by Jessica Chiarella
4.0

Thank you to Putnam Books for a gifted copy of “The Lost Girls” by Jessica Chiarella.

I am here for any kind of media narrative, and “The Lost Girls” is centered around true crime podcaster Marti Reese. It’s been more than 20 years since her sister, Maggie, disappeared, and Marti has started her podcast to bring attention to Maggie’s case and other missing women.

When the podcast takes off, Marti gets a call from a tipster with a vested interest. Ava Vreeland is working to get her brother Colin out of prison; she’s convinced he was wrongly convicted of murdering his girlfriend Sarah, and that Sarah’s murder and Maggie’s disappearance are connected.

I am not usually one for slow burn thrillers, but I loved this one. The vast majority of this hooo is spent inside Marti’s head, and I didn’t mind it. She is a deeply flawed protagonist, but she’s an honest one. The last 30 percent of the book is a true thriller — heart pounding, can’t put it down style.

If you liked “The Night Swim,” which is also about a true crime podcaster, I think you’ll really enjoy this one, too. Hit me with your best media-centric book recs
