The Conspiracy of Us
by Maggie Hall
** Thank you Penguin (Putnam Books) for providing me with an early copy of this book**
So let's talk about The Conspiracy of Us by Maggie Hall. I don't think there are enough words to describe how much I loved this book. I had my eye on this book way before I was approved to receive and early copy, so I was super super excited to finally be reading it!
In a short summary, the story follows a teenage girl named Avery West. After moving from place to place for all her life, Avery and her mom arrive in Lakehaven where she's finally begun to make friends and a guy that Avery finds attractive has asked her to prom. Chaos erupts after her mom tells her they have to move again, and Avery confides in herself to take this last oppurtunity to go to prom and have, what she thinks, to be the best night of her life. At prom, however, the last thing she would expect is a knife at her chest, a cute guy whisking her away to France, and a long lost family she's never known about!
This book intertwines some peculiar historical events with the story of an exciting adventure to find a lost family and a new-found love. Our historical mentions- Alexander the Great, the Hagia Sophia in Instanbul, the Greeks! All subjects of which I just learned in Global class a few days ago! How lucky for me. These mentions in the book were all believable, and I could tell, the author spoke about these places as if she'd even visited them herself. We can't all be historical buffs, however.
Did you like the romance in the Throne of Glass, The Divergent series, or the Infernal Devices trilogy? Well then you're going to love our main love interest here! Jack Bishop, a dashing young man, is one of my current obsessions as of now. I can't get over how incredibly romantic he is. There's this really intimate moment in the book between Avery and Jack that I completely devoured! They seem really different from the mainstream YA OTP, and I think it's because they kind of, in a sense, weren't (aren't) supposed to be in love... but they are!!! Don't even get me started on Jack's tattoo!
The writing style was light, humorous, exciting! A 336 page book that I read in a single day without pausing for breaks. The action occurs almost immediately and nine chapters into the book, I was calling my mom for her to bring the dinner to my bedroom so I could read in peace. The Conspiracy of Us is a new novel that you'd want to make sure you got off the shelves of the nearest bookstore!
I'm like dying over here *gasps for air* for the second book (if there is one) to come out! I already fangirled on twitter, emailed the author, and sent out a huge rant to my friends about how amazing this book is! Yes YA authors of 2015, just keep the good books coming!
