Of all the fairytale retellings, I’ve always harboured a soft spot for Beauty and the Beast (with Cinderella coming a close second.) A childhood spent watching the classic Disney movies definitely set me along the path of loving fairytales and their retellings. Katee Robert’s ‘The Dragon’s Bride’ ticks all the required boxes, hits all the right beats, and yet somehow goes a step further towards sheer perfection. 

 

Our heroine is Briar Rose and we meet her just as she is making a deal with a demon. Life is not treating her so well and Azazel’s deal is the only remaining escape route. She is a guarded, tough woman, she’s had to be, and she enters into the deal understanding that in order to gain her freedom from her earthly nightmare she will be giving up seven years of her life in service in the demon realm. 

 

Meanwhile we have Sol. What can I say about Sol that won’t spoil you? Firstly he’s the leader of the dragon realm (even the snippets that we get about the other realms will leave any bonkers romance readers hungry for the rest of this series). More than that; he is charming, he’s thoughtful, he’s gentle when gentle is needed and yet he is raw ferocious passion when raw ferocious passion is needed. And all that before I mention that he is doubly endowed ;) 

 

The Dragon’s Bride could, by another’s pen, have joined the ranks of fairytale retellings I have enjoyed, or another line in my tally of spicy romances. What sets it aside are the sumptuous world building details – just enough to give you the full picture without becoming overwhelming, the emotional connection between our main couple as they face their unconventional circumstances, her emotional trauma, and his duty to his people, and the utterly glorious spicy scenes. Those who have read it will understand what I’m alluding to when I refer to three simple words; “Chase me, Sol.” 

 

Absolutely delicious! 

 

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book, and was already a fan of the author, but this review is of my own volition and truly represents my own opinion of the book.
