The Crown: The Official Companion, Volume 2: Political Scandal, Personal Struggle, and the Years That Defined Elizabeth II (1956-1977) by Robert Lacey

1.0

Even worse than the first companion book, whilst still useful for research I was conducting, I would not recommend this to anyone! There are far better books covering the history of this period out there. Particularly insidious was the way in which Lacey managed to spin the Queen's mediocre, tepid 'support' for African countries divesting themselves from the coloniser in the mid - late 20th century as somehow a radical move by an egalitarian monarch, even as she upheld the very empire conditions that those countries struggle to escape today, decades later. (Nevermind the fact that her own palaces could not possibly hire non white staff, until public pressure forced a removal of the ban a few years ago!)
Really do not recommend reading!
