The Water Dancer
by Ta-Nehisi Coates
This was a difficult and beautiful book. As a white person raised in Virginia it was incredibly eye opening to see the places around my childhood described with such horror, one that as a priveleged white person I have not had to face. But there was passion and hope and belief and it was beautiful to see the stories live on.
As a mom that had lost a child, the pain of grief hit me hard, especially when Thena was told about Kesseh and couldn't handle having that wound reopened. I had a big cry when I was done, my own raw wound reopening. This was a hard and painful read but it was also beautiful and raw and real and I'm very glad I got to experience it.
