Maisie Dobbs

Very slow start--initial "mystery" solution was glib. Character comes off as seeing herself as superior in judgment to pretty much everyone. A little annoying. LONG flashback section more interesting but I'm not convinced--even having finished the book--that it was totally necessary. Ending section of higher quality than the rest. I checked out the second one in the series at the same time as I checked out this one, so I'll read it, but if it's not a lot better, will probably stop there.
August 2023: re-read for a book group. I'm of pretty much the same mind as I was the first time; the 150-page flashback still does not seem to be necessary to the story, and it certainly isn't prompted by anything in the story. The main story just suddenly stops and we get all the back story. The current penchant for telling tales out-of-order is just tiresome when there is no real function for it. Would give it 2.5 stars if that were an option. I did read the second one in the series and hated it. Haven't read any of the others and won't now.
