Bridget Jones's Diary
by Helen Fielding
ahh i genuinely really liked this!! it's so insanely british and so insanely 90s, just a great snapshot of what life and culture and dating was like at that time. while of course certain references and ways of thinking/speaking and etc were very dated, a lot of it is still timeless or at the very least relatable now, in this day and age. and i laughed a lot while reading this! such a funny book and such a quick read, which is something i have desperately been needing. the experience of reading this in the park in a san francisco summer is just *chef's kiss*.
it's honestly much less a romance book and much more a slice of life, character exploration type of book. very humorous, self-aware, witty, full of emotional highs and lows and bridget's tongue-in-cheek, self-deprecating, at times very infuriating approach to the world. and oh man, does she piss me off sometimes. but i love the way she picks herself back up and is optimistic enough to try again after the many many setbacks and embarrassments she faces. the main romance i honestly thought was so cute, i was kicking my feet every time mark darcy was mentioned, but there wasn't so much in the way of romantic buildup. it was very subtle and still my ass was NOTICING, even if bridget wasn't. he was really like WHY AM I MEETING THIS PRETTY GIRL FOR THE FIRST TIME AS AN ADULT WHILE WEARING A GOOFY ASS ARGYLE SWEATERRRR (also, sadly, i know for Sure i'm in an avoidant attachment city girl summer phase when daniel cleaver is attractive to me.)
