The Shrike is the most interesting thing about this story yet we never get to experience it. The entire book is about a pilgrimage to this thing and then it ends before they actually encounter it. I’m sure in the follow-up novels this happens but I don’t plan on reading them. The whole mastermind triple agent plot felt entirely rushed and I didn’t have any stake in it. There was no “ah ha” moment as I’m sure was intended.
I thought the first 2/3rds of the book were interesting and the personal stories were intriguing. The last two though just made me want to be done. I’ll just Wikipedia the rest of the series and find out what happens.
