it's hard to find the words for this -to describe this as a compassionate and even sometimes tender horror novel almost sounds like an oxymoron. full of incredibly-crafted scares and a sense of building dread, while also examining trauma, mental illness, and the long lasting impacts of abuse. the hype is definitely deserved! the author clearly did her research, especially around mental illness and

. i do not have a that diagnosis so i can't speak to the accuracy, but the afterward details conversations she had with others - i'd love to see some community perspectives on this.
