Firebrand by Kristen Britain
3.0

Firebrand follows on from the events in [b:Mirror Sight|20330880|Mirror Sight|Kristen Britain|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1388223526s/20330880.jpg|25651980]. We find Karigan returned to the world she once knew, with foggy memories of the events that transpired in the future. She is then sent on a mission to find aid against the second empire in the p'hedrose. Of course, she gets side-tracked by various events, that lead the story in a completely different direction than you'd expect.
Britain is a master in this form of literary deception, which is why I enjoy her writing so much. Being a bit unpredictable and having a well structured story-line in this day and age can be difficult, as it is often expected for authors to use predictable structures.
However, she is usually quite literal when naming her books, so I had an expectation there would be excessive amount of "beserker" King Zachary. Something about this one just didn't hit the right mark. It didn't have the fiery passion of battle I was expecting, in fact the only actual battle to take place seem underwhelming. Obviously I've been reading too much of [a:John Gwynne|5898355|John Gwynne|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1404419158p2/5898355.jpg]'s work.
