"The storm has been working up not for three days as he supposed, but for six years. It had brewed in the obscurities of being where no eye pierced, his surroundings had thickened it.  It had burst and he had not died.  The brilliancy of day was around him, he stood upon the mountain range that overshadows youth, he saw."

There's something wonderful about working through all the metaphor Forester creates.   He paints such an evocative experience about what it means to be different, to love and to be queer.  It just sucks that 2/3 of the men are actual turds.  Maurice is awful to his family and a rather difficult individual to like considering his rude frankness.  He's angry which is understandable and ultimately becomes the antagonist to society that he and Clive once desired and conspired to be.  Clive is nothing but a cowardly hypocrite who hides behind his intellect and logic which ultimately betray him and keep him more imprisoned by society than he ever was before while giving him the illusion of freedom.

Honestly, Alex Scudder deserved better than Maurice Hall.
