SERIES REVIEW:

Not since reading Legendborn have I read a book that is able to perfectly blend an incredible and fresh fantasy story with very real social issues.

Garber brilliantly paints a portrait of a girl who is considered “illegal” both in her non-magic and magical societies.  The parallels were made with just the right amount of oomph that the reader can’t help but both be sucked into the story, but also stop to reflect about what labeling someone as “illegal” does to that person’s life.

Manu is such fun hero to follow.  She is strong, passionate, loyal, curious, fierce, and brave.  I love watching her grow and seeing the friendships she makes along her journey of self discovery.  She is up there badass fictional female characters I’d like to be friends with.

I love how Garber used Argentinian folklore as the inspiration for this incredible story about obliterating social/patriarchal norms and belonging.  I loved how she didn’t translate the Spanish, but rather gave the reader enough clues for non-Spanish speakers to pick up on the meaning.  It just all was so well done and I can’t recommend this series enough!

Definitely a good series for people just starting to dabble in fantasy and for those who like books that challenge them to think about important social issues.
