Boy Parts by Eliza Clark

4.0

“ do I have to smash a glass over the head of every single man I come into contact with, just so I leave a fucking mark? “

boy parts follows irina, a photographer who scouts boy on the streets of newcastle and take explicit but powerful photographs of them which gets her the chance to be a part of this big exhibiton. we read the story from irina’s perspective - which was an amazing experience to me - as she tries to choose the right pieces from her previous works for the exhibiton and find new models she catch feelings for a boy but things go down to the shit hole very quickly.

even though the main character is really unlikeable, unreliable, manipulates everyone around her and she literally has no stopping mechanisms when it comes to doing the most cruel shit; i felt close to her which made me turn the pages feeling jittery and excited. in some aspects i relate to her, kinda felt her pain and wanted to tap her on the back.

this story is really dark but has it’s own humorous sides, not an easy read but makes you think about a lot of important subjects such as self harm, negative body image, toxic relationships, gender issues and consent which we usually don’t talk about in daily life. so i recommend for those who might be interested but please check trigger warnings before you proceed.
