A Cup of Sake Beneath the Cherry Trees by Yoshida Kenkō
4.0
I just started getting into classics! Since I’m a huge fan of Japanese literature, I decided to kick things off with A Cup of Sake Beneath the Cherry Trees by Yoshida Kengō. He was a 13th-century Japanese author and Buddhist monk.
The book feels like a collection of his random thoughts and observations. Some parts really resonate with me, especially those about dealing with death. Even though it was written centuries ago, there are still some comforting words throughout. One of my favorites is:
"What kind of man will feel depressed at being idle? There is nothing finer than to be alone with nothing to distract you."
It’s got that classic Japanese vibe—simple yet so soothing. I’d rate it 4 out of 5. I think starting my classic reading journey with a short book like this was a great choice!
