My Favourite Mistake
by Marian Keyes
Anna has had enough of New York. Turning her back on a fabulous apartment and a hugh flying career she moves back to the motherland. When one of her sister's friends offers her a job doing PR for a new high end coastal retreat Anna jumps at the chance, but suddenly realises she might have bitten off more than she can chew. Even worse, her new role will bring her face to face with a man she thought she would see again.
I do love a good Walsh family story. That said, I haven't read the first installment that focuses on Anna, mainly because I learnt one of the key plot points before I had a chance to and kind of spoiled myself. I may go back to it at some point, but I didn't feel like not having read it hindered my enjoyment of this one.
I've connected with all of the Walsh sisters throughout the course of reading their stories, and Anna was no different. We start the story with learning what brought her to the point of leaving New York, and her story is understandable (even though Mammy Walsh thinks it's a cliche!!) Anna is relatable and very easy to read about. There's a few other recurring characters in this one too, obviously the other Walsh family members, but also Narky Joey (now known as the Go Boy) is key. Joey is possibly one of my favourite characters here. I loved how Keyes lets his story unfold for us alongside Anna's.
In terms of the plot this did end up pretty much where I expected, but as always with Keyes stories it's the journey to get there that is what's important. This one has it all, there's humour and heartbreak, and a fair few real life issues are covered too. If I had one criticism it's that the ending dragged out longer than I felt necessary. As a whole though I enjoyed the read, and flew through the book despite it being over 600 pages long.
I'm enjoying the second round of Walsh family stories, I hope they continue and we get further installments for the other sisters too!
