Very interesting and often funny stories that show a lot about the Buddhist way of life. Becoming a monk is tough and I know for sure now that it's nothing for me. (Living with snakes in the forests of Thailand? Eating rotten food? Hmm.) Meditation and mindfullness have found its way into the Western Culture and rightly so. However, Buddhism goes way further if someone wants to find true enlightment.
Brahm, the author of the book, covers topics that are of interest for all of us and shows his interpretation. It's strongly influenced by his teacher Ajahn Chah who was a very special man. You can find some of his material for free in the internet (try buddhanet.net).
As usual, when reading a personal story I am looking for authenticy. This is where the book really shines! Brahm can laugh about himself, shows typical emotions and fights his ego. He is one of these guys who can make it everywhere, Buddhist or not. This made me a bit sceptical in the beginning. His humor and his big, open heart converted me and I had a wonderful time.
In the end, reading the book was a de-mystifying experience. My beliefs and expectations of what Buddhism does and offers have changed and I got a new perspective. One can say that it was life changing - and this deserves 5 stars.
