Sweet Bean Paste by Durian Sukegawa

Reread 2021

i adored this book the first time and i adore it even more after the second read. it is such a simple concept with a big hit. it starts with an older lady called tokue enquiring about getting a job at a doraharu shop. and as the story continues it gets deeper, and tragic and inspiring all at once. it’s a multigenerational friendship, with a history lesson thrown in. it’s a story full of lessons. both times, i have come out of this book appreciating the things that are easy to take for granted. like freedom, having a purpose, being considered “normal”. i will come back to the many underlined passages when i’m struggling with something.

i love japanese fiction and this is the one i started with in 2019 and i highly recommend anyone to read this.
