The Great Cat Massacre: And Other Episodes in French Cultural History by Robert Darnton

informative

3.0

I didn’t realise this was an essay collection, I had expected it to lead up to the story of the cat massacre and fully dissect that. Now it felt more like a collection of stories about 18th century French publishing, and the way it impacted people from all sorts of ranks. I thought the cat massacre story and the story of fairytales/folklore was very interesting, but I couldn’t really care about the other essays. Still, acknowledging what this book has done for history made me really glad to have read it.
