The Eye That Never Sleeps: How Detective Pinkerton Saved President Lincoln by Marissa Moss

5.0

The illustrations blew me away: Pinkerton's never-sleeping eye echoes throughout the book, tying it all together. The illustrator's note in the back addresses the method, but the effect is stunning.

The text offers information at the perfect pace, following Pinkerton through his migration to the United States, his early careers, and the beginnings of the Pinkerton detectives. I love that Moss included Kate Warne's role (there's been a few books just about her lately), and even addressed the way the detectives' roles changed after Pinkerton died.

Although the book doesn't go down this rabbit hole, reading this spurred all kinds of thoughts about how different history would be if the plot to kill Lincoln had succeeded.
