Spoilers for the very conclusion of the whole series.
The bury-your-gays right at the end of the ultimate book in the series really soured me on it. It seemed like there was ample room for a redemption arc showing how Nathan was traumatized and changed by his experiences and creating hope for a brighter future, but instead the central (and only, iirc) gay couple of the whole series was killed, with the main character essentially committing suicide; I found the ending depressing, nihilistic, and somewhat triggering. In a cultural vacuum I would respect the author's artistic choice, but given the history of gay people being killed in fiction, I thought it was tasteless, especially coming from an author who is not a gay man herself.
