The Bitter Past by Bruce Borgos
Russia, The KGB, and atomic bombs.

My first ARC of the year and it was my first 4-star read! I will cry if this book doesn’t become a Netflix or Hulu series in the next few years!

Small spoilers ahead.

SpoilerFirst Thoughts
After reading just a few chapters, I found myself immediately drawn into this book. The action began on the very first page, and it took me by surprise!

Brin
I loved Brin's character! Her "I don't give a [beep]" attitude was great, and she was very versatile. I appreciated her willingness to help and how she didn't stay where she wasn't wanted. Unfortunately, her childhood trauma still had a hold on her life, but I'm glad she could still love and live. And let me not forget; she could handle a gun!

Georgiy
Although he came to America under one pretense, love changed his heart, and I enjoyed reading through his life decisions. I loved getting to experience his journey from beginning to end and seeing his actions’ repercussions spin full circle. Georgiy’s character had a tremendous amount of character development, and I was astounded by the vast amount of transformation he did throughout the story.

Overall
This book has been my favorite read this year. As I mentioned before, I hope that a network picks it up for a movie or TV series, as it has the potential to be phenomenal. I loved the historical aspect that the book brought, as I did not know much about the Cold War or the atomic age. It was very fascinating! I fell in love with the characters, and although some parts of the plot were predictable, there were still many surprising twists and turns. I enjoyed the past/present perspectives, which made me eager to continue reading.

I was a little sad about the ending, but I was satisfied with it at the same time.

Read this if you like:
Lots of action
A great thriller/suspense read
Cold War/atomic age setting

Steer clear if you hate:

Gruesome details of crime scenes
Abandonment of a child
Mental health condition representation
Dual-view perspective, past/present.
Gravesites/graverobbers

Big thanks to the author, Minotaur Books, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of The Bitter Past!
