Untamed Shore by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
3.0
adventurous dark mysterious slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

A slow-paced, kind of old-fashioned, crime novel. Morally gray characters abound, including the protagonist. Overall an entertaining read.

Silvia Moreno Garcia’s writing is as lovely as always, and her female characters are always strong and easy to root for, even if, as this book reveals, they may not be able to be considered heroines. Viridiana is young and bored, living in a small village and dreaming for something more. But she’s certainly no Disney princess, wholesome and hopeful. She’s smart, cunning, and not at all afraid to go after what she wants even if it’s not best for those around her. She’s impulsive and not always likable but in a good way. She’s not one-dimensional by any stretch of the imagination. She’s complicated. Multi-faceted.

This is a fairly short book, under 300 pages, but even so it seemed slightly too long. Perhaps it drags out just a little bit too much. It’s nowhere near the previous two books I’ve read by Garcia (Mexican Gothic and The Beautiful Ones) but a fun read nonetheless.
