I'm always a bit skeptical about starting trilogies, as there have been so many where I couldn’t get past the first book - but this one pleasantly surprised me. It transports the reader to ancient Pompeii, following the story of a slave girl named Amara. (If being a woman just 50 years ago meant being denied basic rights, you can only imagine what it meant to be a slave woman in ancient Pompeii.) The story begins on a heartbreaking note, but what I loved most is that it’s also about hope, staying true to your dreams no matter the odds, and the power of female friendship and support.
I’ll definitely be continuing with the next book - I'm eager to see whether Amara manages to fulfill her dreams despite the harsh injustices of her world.
