thecosynook 's review for:
The Worst Witch
by Jill Murphy
Can you believe I've never read any of these books or seen the tv show?! Not sure if they're as big now as they were when I was younger but everyone was reading/watching these as a kid! I clearly missed the boat (nobody is surprised) however there was a readathon and it fitted for one of the challenges so I figured why not give it a go!
In this book we follow Mildred, a trainee witch who (surprisingly) isn't actually a very good witch. She gets all her spells wrong and she can't even ride a broomstick! Will Mildred ever get it right?
Another short review here (the book is a little over 100 pages) however I still really enjoyed this book. We start by reading about our main character Mildred, she gets herself into some situations as all of her spells go wrong! We see her struggling and doubt whether or not she is cut out to be a witch and whether she should continue with her training.
This is such a fun and fast paced read. It definitely gave me Harry Potter vibes but with a much shorter story and with Neville as the main character instead of Harry! I loved seeing what trouble Mildred got into and how she had to deal with her nemesis who will do anything to get Mildred in trouble!
As an adult reader this wasn't the best book (certainly not up to Gruffalo standards) but it was a super quick read and it introduced me to a character that I should have met years ago (when I was more the correct age!)
For younger readers I would definitely recommend this book, it is short but funny with an interesting story. Older readers may not enjoy it as much but if you want a quick read (especially for a readathon!) then pick this book up!
