A Conspiracy of Bones by Kathy Reichs

2.0

Score: 2/5

Someone found a body with no face and no hand at Cleverland County. Margot Heaver handled the autopsy of the body. Later Heaver revealed that the body was an Asian man. Temperance Brennan felt something was wrong with the result, so she decided to do the secret investigation all by herself. Brennan found out that the faceless man was involved with the missing child named Jahaan Cole. A connection between them will drive Brennan into the darker and more twisted world.

A Conspiracy of Bones is the 19th book of a Temperance Brennan series. It was published in 2020 by Simon & Schuster Australia and guess what they did a pretty good job promoting it. I bought this book because of Simon & Schuster Australia’s Instagram. The ads were very interesting. Anyway, when I got it, I put it on my shelf for a while before I started reading it.

Like I mentioned earlier that this is the 19th book of the series. I assumed that I didn’t need to start reading from the 1st book. How wrong I was. 30% of A Conspiracy of Bones story was based on the previous book which I had no clue what they were talking about. Moreover, this book was quite boring. It took me a month to finish this book because I didn’t wanna read it. A few chapters from the beginning I understand why it was slow because there were intros. I kept reading and reading, hoping that it will get exciting. Nope, it wasn’t. I still had a little bit of hope at the end but nah, still boring.

Another thing that I just have to say out loud is language. This book wrote in English and a few other languages. I am not an English speaker however I am no stranger to English. I must admit that the author used pretty difficult vocabulary. What I mean is there was plenty of abbreviation that I didn’t know what they meant. I guess those abbreviations are American or something. Moreover, there were Russian and Estonian. Yes, there were translations, but the translation appeared in another chapter. I’m not done here. In one chapter, there was a full-on French conversation that had no English translation whatsoever. I had to use Google Translate which was very irritating.

Even though I don’t like a lot of stuff in this book, I really liked the technology in it. The detective was using some sort of fancy equipment to solve the crime plus a lot of brainpower. There was malware on the computer which I have no idea what it means. Solved the puzzle from mp3, I’ve never known that thing exists. When the secret was revealed after decoded mp3, it was so brilliant. That part was the best part of the book.

I gonna let you decide whether or not you wanna read it. In my opinion, I still gonna read the first book of this series and decide from there. However, I gonna have to say no to A Conspiracy of Bones. It was unbearable.
