All for Nothing by Walter Kempowski

3.0

"East Prussia" last days of WWII, in a big old Manor house, the Georgenhof. Although we see into three minds of many of the residents and visitors, it is sort of at a distance. And although tons are bad and getting worse and visitors keep stealing or otherwise taking advantage of the family, they don't see it. Nor do any of the Germans seems to see the end of the Reich. None of the characters is really sympathetic but none is totally evil either. It's a strange, compelling little book.
