Check, Please! Book 2: Sticks & Scones by Ngozi Ukazu
4.0
This series is just the sweetest! So wholesome and funny without ever avoiding some tougher convos, like homophobia in sports, coming out to your family, parents who aren’t as supportive as they could be. I liked how this volume built up Jack and Bitty, and allowed the to grow in their understanding of each other and themselves. A new class of kids in the Haus made for a nice change of pace, but I did miss some of the guys who graduated! Ukazu makes you feel like you’re among friends, and plays off that ever-present nostalgia for the good old college days. While I still feel a bit of the big picture of the story is lost in the episodic format (not much to be done when adapting from a weekly webcomic!) I still really enjoyed this, and will definitely miss these characters.
Even if you’re not a big hockey fan, I’d still recommend this to just about anyone looking for a hilarious and heartwarming story.
