This is a masterclass in characterisation. Evelyn Hugo feels so real, so dynamic; beautiful and flawed.
You love her and you hate her, as do the characters within the book. It is just so well done.
The story is emotional and at it’s core, about love. About romantic and platonic love, about what kind of love you feel you deserve and about the nature of love itself.
TJR encapsulates the feel of a Hollywood starlet so completely, and I was mesmerised the whole time. Teared up at the end but did not cry :(
About halfway through I started to guess the relation between Evelyn and Monique, the journalist, but it still payed off well in the end.
I particularly enjoyed the discussion on bisexuality and the determination to not erase that part of Evelyn Hugo. It was very special and poignant. As was the discussions regarding sexism and cultural erasure.
Overall definitely recommend it, and I’m glad I’ve now read a TJR book where I didn’t dislike every single character haha (although daisy jones is also incredibly well done, arguably bc I didn’t like any of the characters).
