I was so close to giving this a 4.5, but I couldn’t get over how the book slowed down so much halfway through. It never felt clear why the novel ending up centering around Mercedes and Francis, whose stories never amounted to anything substantial. 
The prose was excellent. The plot was dense, but maybe in the wrong places. And I’m not sure how I felt about how every secret the family held surrounding James’s evilness.
