Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: The Original Screenplay
by J.K. Rowling
This screenplay puts me in a weird situation. In my review for "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" I mentioned that it did not bother me rather it is a novel or a screenplay because in both formats it would still be a bad story. Now, while reading a good story like "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" in screenplay form, I just realized that this script format actually bothers me. Don´t get me wrong: I liked the plot, I really enjoyed seeing the movie and I also enjoyed this book for the most part but I know that I WOULD HAVE LOVED IT SO MUCH MORE AS A NOVEL! Newt´s personality and his love for magical creatures, the backstory of the two sisters Tina and Queenie, Jacob Kowalski´s fascination for the wizarding world, a bit more explanation about the Obscurial and so much more - all these things could have been fleshed out so much more in an actual novel with inner monologues of all these characters. However, the design of this screenplay is simply beautiful, I really loved the small illustrations. It was also a good decision to watch the movie before reading the play to imagine some of the creatures better which did not all appear in the Harry Potter books as well. The plot itself was not perfect for sure but definitely very enjoyable and I think that it was a good decision to create a new story which is set in an earlier time period within the same universe, so don´t need to complain about the way our favorite characters changed.(Yes I am looking at you, Cursed Child!) Overall I liked story itself fine but I just did not enjoy the way in which it was told enough to rate it higher than 3 of 5 stars.
