Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi
5.0

First of all, the above teaser/summary doesn’t do the book justice. I don’t know if I can. If you liked Graceling, then you’ll love this. And if you know me and how much I love Graceling, then you’ll realize that isn’t a compliment I give lightly. The sequel can’t come soon enough.

You enter a world that has been destroyed by aether storms. Some people were able to create a world in pods. These pods protected them from the environmental dangers. After generations of life in the pods, the safety becomes suffocating. The pods are on the brink of something…rebellion, riots, anarchy. Aria witnesses the possibilities and this may cause problems for an ambitious councilman, so he casts her out to die.

The rest of the population adapted to this new environment. Various mutations happened, like enhanced features and talents. Tribes formed, something similar to medieval times. Perry is from this world. Life has not been easy for his people or for him. He has enhanced sight and smell. He has the ability to smell people’s tempers. It serves him like a human lie detector and makes him an excellent tracker.

Perry reluctantly saves Aria and they set out together. Aria to find her mother, who went missing. Perry to get his nephew back from her people. Their travel is strained and indifferent. Aria who has never felt physical pain shows her metal by keeping up with Perry despite her bloodied feet. This begins to soften Perry’s view toward her.

The beauty of this book is how Aria becomes alive. She was raised in a sheltered, controlled, manufactured environment. Now out in the world, she discovers the beauty of the unknown…its imperfections and even its danger. It is a beautiful thing to watch someone learn, escape fear and find joy. It is what draws Perry to her in the end. But there are rules and the rules say that Dwellers and Outsiders won’t work. Perry has witnessed the resulting pain of when people act on their love despite their differences.

Will Aria and Perry find their loved ones? Will the pod Dwellers erupt into chaos? Will Aria and Perry love?
