The American Heiress
by Daisy Goodwin
An adult book! Shocking for me, I know. This was a perfect vacation read, and I didn't want it to end. That said, it wasn't particularly well written, and the characters weren't all developed. For example, it would have been a much better love story if I could have fallen for Ivo, the main guy. But sometimes he was a jerk, and other times he was nice, and never really explained. But, I kept reading because it was a period that I enjoy (1890s New England and England). It was like Masterpiece Theatre about an American-- perfect!
I have toured the mansions of Newport, RI, but now I can really imagine the parties and lifestyle. I'll think of the painted hummingbirds, cigarettes made of $100 bills, and parties starting at midnight. A good setting for a summer read.
