The Sporty One: My Life as a Spice Girl by Melanie C

emotional inspiring reflective medium-paced

4.0

The Spice Girls - Baby Spice, Posh Spice, Scary Spice, Ginger Spice and Sporty Spice. These five were everywhere from 1996-2000, a time when I was 6-10 years of age. I remember the lollipops, the rings, the cards, commercials, they were on everything and they were everywhere. I remember they were quite influential in Canada. A group of us would play Spice Girls and I always wanted to be Sporty Spice. I related to her because I swam, practiced judo and tried every sport. This is Melanie Cs story as The Sporty One.

I knew the band was all encompassing but what I didn’t realize was that the height of their fame really lasted about 4 years. To reach that kind of world domination for such a short time period and whose songs are known and sang 20 years later by everyone and anyone, is incredible.

I liked the progression of this book as it moved linearly building as their career increased. Mel C goes through her tumultuous, although happy, childhood to her young adulthood and fame. She also talks about the complexities of the music industry and navigating fame, along with a look into media, especially the British media. A glimpse into a world very few experience is always fascinating to me.

Thank you @hbgcanada @grandcentralpub for sending me a copy of The Sporty One in exchange for an honest review, 4✨.
