Rotter House is Felix’s last chance. He’s written a few books that haven’t gotten him the success he seeks, and this book about living in a haunted house for twelve nights is his last bid at fame and success before he throws in the towel. A skeptic at heart, he’s doubtful he’ll have much ghostly phenomena to write about. However, he quickly realizes that Ritter House might just be the real deal.

Ugh, what a bummer!!! It’s such a good premise and such a good cover. But I regret I actually spent money on this one instead of waiting for the library copy. Here’s what I did not like:

-Just outright racist tropes and plot lines

-The dialogue was awful. A lot of pop culture and meta references, which I don’t mind if it’s done well (like, think Scream). However, here they were repetitive, out of place, and I felt like I was getting hit over the head with the author just dumping random horror pop culture on me, not like I was reading two real people have a conversation.

-Pace: The beginning was slow with a lot of meandering, repetitive, unrealistic conversations between the protagonist and his best friend, but the middle really picked up and was actually genuinely creepy. Too bad that didn’t last…

-The ending!!!!! What a freaking miss. Totally destroyed this book for me (or it would have, if the racist tropes and weird handling of race in general in this book hadn’t already ruined it).

Overall, it’s a haunted house story. Maybe give it a try if you like an unreliable narrator, but honestly I’d give this one a skip.
