Spy Glass by Maria V. Snyder

3.0

I actually enjoyed this until the whole picking Devlan thing at the end.
If her relationship with Kade was not the one, it would have been better for her to go on her own.
I liked that the study books focus on Yelena. Everyone else, including Valek, is a side character. She is the focus. So it would have been fine for it to end with Opal finding her purpose.

Valek is morally grey but he stopped Yelena from being executed, trained her and protected her. He never tortured her, he never tricked her into sleeping with him.

I also found it grating that Devlan talks about admiring Opal’s strength when she was 14! It just highlighted the horrible power dynamic. Her ending up with him did not feel empowering at all.

I still love the world that was built and the dynamic of the other characters which is why it’s 3 stars.

I’m looking forward to delving back into Yelena’s world.
